After the Six-Day war in 1967, Palestinians were forbidden from openly showcasing their national flag and its colors. Any public display, whether in publications, ads, or photos, led to imprisonment or worse. So to avoid this, Palestinians ingeniously turned to watermelons with their red, green, black, and white hues as a subtle means to express their national pride and resistance. Today, watermelons have evolved into a public symbol of resistance and cultural pride, portrayed in artworks that represent the ongoing struggle against apartheid.
